Having rusty bolts in a car and drilling them out / cutting them off doesn’t take 14 days and an extra $500 though. The fault with the mechanic was leaving us out of the loop and we had to keep chasing things up with them. I said our car, correct. I don’t own the car.

Rusty bolts on a car make it very difficult indeed to remove said parts. They usually have to be cut out using a grinder or similar tool. which makes perfect sense as it is a pain in the arse to remove. Not the fault of the mechanic in my book. Besides… this type of job usually costs about $2500 so it sounds like you actually got a good deal. and you said OUR car… lol
