Message from a hard working Aussie

I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to earn that pay cheque, as I work on a mine site on a Kalgoorlie (WA) construction project, I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem.

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test. Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a Centerlink Payment because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Please understand – I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone sit on their backsides drinking grog & smoking dope.

Could you imagine how much money the Government would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a Centerlink Payment?

New Year, newborn, new stuff

Well it has been awhile since my last post almost a whole month. Wow, that has gone quick! So what is new? A lot of things actually, which I will try and summarise and keep this post short.

We looked at moving into a new place, but ended up renewing the current lease.
We quit smoking.
We found out we are pregnant, and find out if it’s a boy or girl on 03/02/10.
The girls had their 4th birthday.
Our Guinea Pigs had 3 babies, but two didn’t make it.

As you can probably tell by the above 5 points, this post could have been quite large but seemed a lot easier to just summarise the lot.

How much Chrisco really costs

So I guess you’ve already seen the ads on television or saw it in the paper, about Chrisco Christmas Hampers in which you pay a certain amount of money each week and at the end of the year everything gets delivered. The question is how much does it really cost?

I have gotten the prices from various supermarket catalogues and simply compared it with the Chrisco Hamper 2010 for this quick research so prices may vary.

Coca Cola Hamper

Chrisco: 2 x 24 packs of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Cap, Coca-Cola beach towel and a frisbee. This costs $137.80 or $3.29 a week over 42 weeks.

Coles: 24 pack of Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta Or Lift Soft Drink Varieties cost $16 each, or a total of $32. So your paying $105.80 for a cap, towel, bag and frisbee.

Apple iMac

Chrisco: Apple 20″ (2.66GHz processor, 320GB drive with 2GB RAM) for $2,184.00 or $42.00 per week.

Apple Store: Apple 21.5″ (3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 500GB drive with 4GB RAM) for $1,599.00 or $52.13 per month.

TV’s

Chrisco: Panasonic 37″ Full HD LCD Television for $1,651.00 or $31.75 per week.

Harvey Norman: Panasonic 37″ Full HD LCD Television for $1499.

So just of these couple of examples, you can see you could potentially save hundreds of dollars if you put the same amount away each week and went to your local grocery store and electrical store.

Apple’s Tablet PC, possible video?

With all the rumors going around about the new Tablet PC from Apple, possibly called iSlate as reported by Neowin, I decided to Google around a bit more and came across this interesting YouTube video.

This is a nice looking concept of the Apple Tablet PC, and can’t wait to see what Apple has in store for us.

Optus Tethering on iPhone OS 3.1.2

There is now a simple way to enable tethering on the iPhone 3G/3Gs using Optus without paying extra. Now if you do happen to get charged I take no responsibility.

Your iPhone must be JailBroken. Add http://apt.iphone-storage.de as a source in Cydia, then search for Tethering and install the one corresponding to your iPhone (Tethering 3G – 3.1.2 or Tethering 3GS – 3.1.2).

Once installed, reboot then open Safari and navigate to http://justynsmith.info/mobileconfig/au_optus.mobileconfig and install the mobileconfig file. Once installed you should be able to go to Settings > General > Networking > Tethering (on/off).

SLiM – Simple Login Manager

I recently swapped from GDM to SLiM on my EeePC running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 and decided to make a nice simple theme for it which you can download.

SLiM - crackware theme

SLiM is exactly that, a Simple Login Manager and it lives up to it’s name. Even being as simple as it is, you can still theme it and it has a configuration file which you can edit.

Three day weekend

So I had Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off this week. What better way to spend it than to go camping. Chell and I packed up the car with the tent, sleeping bags, food e.t.c. and off we went. We ended up going to The Boulders at Babinda.

We arrived around 8:30pm and setup the tent, bed and had a cup of coffee. It was so hot sleeping, and I didn’t really fit too well in the tent, I had to lay sort of diagonally to fit properly. The next morning we got up at around 7am and had lovely cold showers, since there was no hot water at the camping grounds!

We ended up going for a walk throughout the forest and got some cool photos, and sat on the boulders and listened to the water, it was nice and peaceful. I started getting sick (Chell was still kind of sick), so we decided to head back to Townsville. We ended up trying to find a place called Misty Mountains, but ended up on someones property so we turned around.

When we arrived home we had Masala for dinner, which was delicious and watched episode 5 and 6 of Nip/Tuck Season 6. The next day we did the grocery shopping and bought a puzzle of London, Chell had to buy it and we have almost finished it.
