As anyone who knows me, knows that I have always put down Apple. Well I did own an iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, but then swapped to Android powered devices.
I’ve always had either Windows or Linux as a desktop or laptop operating system, and it’s served my purposes quite well. So it was a surprise to not only myself, but I am sure many others when I bought a 13-inch Macbook Air (mid-2013) model.
So, lets jump into what I got for the $1124 price tag with a magic mouse.
Screen: 13.3-inch LED glossy screen (1440×900)
Storage: 128GB SSD
CPU / Memory: 1.3GHz dual-core i5 (boost to 2.6GHz) / 4GB 1600MHz LPDDR3
Video: Intel HD Graphics 5000 (up to 2560×1600 on external display)
Connections: 2 x USB3 (5Gbps), 1 x Thunderbolt (10Gbps), SDXC, headphone, MagSafe 2 power
Other: 802.11ac/a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4, backlit keyboard, dual mic
Battery: 12 hours battery / 30 days standby
Now, for this price, what more could you want, really? Well, a retina display would be nice, but that would use up more power and besides, the resolution on this Macbook isn’t something that is “bad”, it is still quite good. The build quality and finish is just like any Apple product, second-to-none.
However with the current Macbook Pro with Retina display has older model CPU and HD4000 video, which I couldn’t justify for the $500 extra.
The battery life is quite amazing on the Macbook Air and everything is quite snappy and fast. I’m surprised how well it works for a dual-core processor, but the new Haswell CPU definitely does everything right. I’ve only had the Macbook for a couple of days, and learning the keyboard shortcuts is still something I’m getting used to.
On the other hand, the touch pad (and magic mouse I got) is the nicest I’ve ever used. It’s smooth and multi-gesture support is awesome and it just feels nice to use. The keyboard is spaced nice, has good feel and is tactile enough to use and the backlight looks sexy.
Bottom line: The 2013 Macbook Air is awesome, yes it lacks a retina display but I cannot really fault it at all. Anyone that wants to get an Apple laptop and doesn’t want to spend a lot, I would recommend it.
