iPhone 3G 3.1.3 sync with Debian

This post is mainly for my reference but hopefully it may help some of you. I am running CrunchBang Linux 10 which uses Debian Squeeze as a base. I changed my /etc/apt.conf from “squeeze” to “testing”.

This is how I got my iPhone 3G to sync in Debian.

Step 1 – Install needed packages.
apt-get build-dep libgpod gtkpod ifuse apt-get install git libsqlite3-dev checkinstall

Step 2 – Install packages from Sid / Unstable.

libimobiledevice
libimobiledevice1
libplist1
libplist-dev
libusbmuxd-dev
libusbmuxd1
usbmuxd

sudo dpkg -i usbmuxd*.deb lib*.deb

Step 3 – Download and install ifuse
git clone git://git.sukimashita.com/ifuse.git cd ifuse ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr make sudo checkinstall -D make install

Step 4 – Download and install libgpod
git clone git://gtkpod.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/gtkpod/libgpod cd libgpod ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr make sudo checkinstall -D make install

Step 5 – Download and install gtkpod
git clone git://gtkpod.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/gtkpod/gtkpod cd gtkpod ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr make sudo checkinstall -D make install

Step 6 – Create mountpoint
sudo mkdir /mnt/iPhone sudo chmod 777 /mnt/iPhone/ sudo useradd -G fuse

Step 7 – Get iPhone ready
Plug in iPhone, then run.
ifuse /mnt/iPhone mkdir /mnt/iPhone/iTunes_Control/Device/ sudo lsusb -v | grep -i iSerial (get the long iSerial number) ipod-read-sysinfo-extended /mnt/iPhone/

Now you should be able to load gtkpod and sync music to the iPhone.

CrunchBang Linux and EeePC 1000HE

I was running Windows 7 on my EeePC and decided to get rid of it. I formatted my drive completely and installed CrunchBang Linux 10 (Statler). Statler is an Alpha release and based off of Debian Squeeze but still running the lightweight Openbox.

For those that are familiar with GNU/Linux know that CrunchBang Linux was using Ubuntu as a base, but now they are using Debian instead. You can have a read about why they switched to Debian.

For anyone with a low-end machine or even wanting to get a nice fast distro running I would highly recommend CrunchBang.

SLiM – Simple Login Manager

I recently swapped from GDM to SLiM on my EeePC running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 and decided to make a nice simple theme for it which you can download.

SLiM is exactly that, a Simple Login Manager and it lives up to it’s name. Even being as simple as it is, you can still theme it and it has a configuration file which you can edit.

Banking online? Don’t use Windows

A NSW Police cybercrime expert recommends using Ubuntu, Puppy Linux or the Apple iPhone, steering clear of Microsoft Windows if you want to bank online.

In a news article Detective Inspector Bruce vad der Graaf says:

If you are using the internet for a commercial transaction, use a Linux boot up disk – such as Ubuntu or some of the other flavours. Puppylinux is a nice small distribution that boots up fairly quickly.

Another option is the Apple iPhone. It is only capable of running one process at a time so there is really no danger from infection.

So what Operating System or device do you use when you do your online banking?

From Ubuntu to Windows 7

Well I was running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my EeePC 1000HE and was going great, so I decided to do a dist upgrade to 9.10 Karmic, bad idea!

It downloaded and installed fine, but when I rebooted wicd wouldn’t pick up my wireless network, so no internet basically means I hosed the machine.

I had a copy of Windows 7 RTM so thought I would give it another run on the EeePC, and I must say it is magically fast, I am loving it. Anyone with a newer modern EeePC running XP or Vista, I would highly recommend updating to Windows 7.

xchat-gnome is not XChat

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 today on my EeePC and notice that the version of XChat I had installed seemed different. The first thing I noticed was it was called xchat-gnome and was build 0.xx. Knowing that XChat was up to version 2.8 I thought it seemed quite odd.

I joined #xchat on freenode and noticed in the topic they had a link to xchat-gnome != XChat which answered my questions.

xchat-gnome and XChat are two different programs. xchat-gnome is a stripped version of the original XChat with less features and only the most common settings included.

Now to get xchat-gnome removed and install XChat I followed these steps:

1. In a terminal type: sudo apt-get ??purge xchat-gnome
2. Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources.
3. Check universe and multiverse repos.
4. In a terminal type: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xchat

Now XChat should be installed and xchat-gnome removed.

The weekend

I awoke with a phone call today at 12noon, I was sleeping in because I got home late from Kirsten’s 21′s last night. I answered the call, and my sister said “have you forgotten something?”, it was her 18th birthday today, I remembered, I was just asleep. So I said happy birthday to her, and she was all happy :-).

I installed OSX 10.5.2 (x86 version) on a spare laptop HDD I had floating around, it seemed to install fine, but failed when it came to booting. So instead I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 and installed that. It worked beautifully, picked up everything in the laptop. I plugged my Logitech V220 into the laptop, and it “just worked”, I’m loving how far linux/bsd has come!

Then later this afternoon, Chell and I went down to the strand for a late lunch / dinner. We cooked up a BBQ, had sausages, steak, mushrooms and capsicum, it was so delicious. Afterwards, we came home, had a bit of a sleep and watched some TV. We are going to lay down again soon and have some ice cream and watch season 2 of Nip/Tuck :-).
