Windows Vista on a ASUS 1000HE EeePC

I will add some pictures of the machine later, stay tuned!

The other day I got Chell and I an ASUS 1000HE EeePC (Black). Now this little netbook packs quite the punch. It lasts up to 9.5 hours on battery which is quite astonishing. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition and runs quite well, but what I wanted to do was install Windows Vista.

Now the specs of the 1000HE seemed decent enough to run Windows Vista. It has an Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, 1GB DDR2-667 memory (1 DIMM) and an Intel GMA950 for graphics. It seemed quite reasonable that Windows Vista will run on it.

It took roughly 40 minutes to get Vista installed on it and then came the drivers. I needed to download the ACPI patch from the ASUS website to get the Fn+F1-F12 e.t.c. buttons working.

I also downloaded the graphics driver for the GMA945 adapter from the Intel website which allowed Windows Vista to run with Aero enabled. I also downloaded the sound driver for the Realtek Hi-Definition Audio and the WLAN driver so I could use the wireless.

Everything else was picked up / drivers installed which was quite good (even the webcam worked). Windows Vista seemed to run quite smoothly even with Aero enabled. I feel that it actually runs quicker than what Windows XP did.

The battery life dropped from the 9.5 hours to 7.5 hours which to me is still quite good. I’m generally able to charge the netbook before it goes flat anyways.

Wow great info, which version of the ACPI patch did you install and can you post the link?

Planning to upgrade to vista tomorrow =) Thanks

  • I can’t remember exactly which one it is, but it is either of these two (one wont run on Vista). or

I am pretty sure it’s the first one though.

    Hi Justyn =)
thanks for the link, got my video drivers to work now but still having a hard time with wifi and ethernet drivers, can you send me the link also?

    Does your webcam work also?

How did you get your drivers to work. I’m trying to get my wifi working, downloaded drivers and they still aren’t working. Do you have any information. I’m using Vista on my Eee pc100he. Thanks.

      • It’s been a few years now since I used Vista on it. One of them now runs Windows 7, and the other runs Linux Mint.

If you take the battery out, on the sticker it should tell you what wireless module you have (mine says AW-NE771).

You could try the following link to download and install the driver.

  • WiFi and Ethernet drivers are available from the ASUS website –

    The webcam also works.

ASUS site doesn’t have drivers for Vista. What did you do?

Do you know of anyone that sells 1000HE’s with Vista loaded already? I’m looking to buy after Microsoft announces it will offer a free 7 upgrade to new purchases for Vista, not XP.

  • I’m not sure if anywhere does sell them with Vista as the netbook says “designed for Windows XP” and ASUS ships them with Windows XP. I haven’t tried Windows 7 RC1 on the EeePC yet (Running it on my main laptop though), but I am sure it would run better than Vista.
